A Berlin Zoo celebrated the birth of two panda cubs on September 2. This is the first time one of the endangered animals has given birth in Germany. Panda named Meng Meng gave birth to twins and the zoo announced the birth through a post on social media saying that Meng Meng became a mother twice.

According to the zoo authorities, motherly nature came naturally to the 6-year-old Panda as she placed the newborn babies gently on her belly and warmed them lovingly with her paws and soft fur of her cheeks. The twin came an hour later the first panda was born. Only last week it was confirmed that Meng Meng was pregnant after mating with a 9-year-old partner Jiao Qing in April. She was also artificially inseminated to increase the chances of pregnancy. Reportedly, the zoo's director Andreas Knieriem also confirmed the good health of the mother along with her two cubs. The sexes of the cubs have not been identified. However, they weight 136g and 186g.

Panda Diplomacy

Meng Meng and Jiao Qing arrived in Berlin from China on a loan in June 2017. This is also known as the “panda diplomacy” where China dispatches their national treasure to many countries to denote close relations between them. The Berlin zoo reportedly pays $15 million in a 15-year contract to host the pandas. Most of the money is going for the conservation and breeding research program in China. The twin cubs that are born in Berlin will be returned to China within four years after being weaned. Evidently, China has given three pandas to Germany but one of them named Bao Bao died in Berlin in 2012 at the age of 34. Bao Bao was also one of the oldest male pandas in the world.

Internet celebrates

With the arrival of the cubs and announcement by the zoo, the internet has also joined hands in celebration. One of the Twitter users said that she will add Berlin to her list to see the pandas as China is closer to her. 

Another user congratulated the new mother, Meng Meng and registered it as "beautiful news" while another also appreciated the zoo staff for adding to the very rare panda population.
