A big billboard showing support to US President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris was seen in Tel Aviv on Monday. The video was projected on the side of a main highway ahead of Biden's inauguration on Wednesday.
Following the scenes that shocked the world from Capitol Hill showing violent protesters loyal to President Donald Trump storm the nation's halls of power, Yael Patir, an Israeli peace activist and a group of Israelis collected money "to send a message of solidarity to our American brothers and sisters."
"We don't want to see it happening here, we want to see democracy prevail as it did eventually in the US," Patir told The Associated Press.
With the Biden administration expected to resume negotiations with Iran on its nuclear program, Biden has pledged to restore US aid to the Palestinians and to work on reviving the peace process. After four years of President Donald Trump's pro-Israel policies, Israel is bracing for a change under the Biden administration. After taking office, Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from Iran's nuclear deal with world powers, winning praise from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who fiercely opposed the Obama-administration's deal.
Trump also delivered a series of additional diplomatic gifts to Netanyahu, including his recognition of contested Jerusalem as Israel's capital. That step, along with moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem, led the Palestinians to sever ties with the US.
Biden, who has long stated his strong support for Israel, is expected to take a more even-handed approach, particularly in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
He has said he will not move the embassy back to Tel Aviv, but he is expected to restore funding to the Palestinians that was cut by the Trump administration and be more critical of Israel's West Bank settlements.
He is also expected to try to return to the Iran deal.
