Meloni Under Probe Over Release Of Wanted Libyan Cop
Giorgia Meloni said on Tuesday that she is under investigation for her government’s unexpected release of a Libyan police officer wanted by the ICC.
New Delhi, India: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Tuesday that she is under investigation for her government’s unexpected release of a Libyan police officer wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The officer, Osama Elmasry Njeem, also known as Osama Almasri Njeem, had been detained briefly in Italy under an ICC arrest warrant for alleged crimes against humanity.
However, he was released last week without consulting the ICC, prompting the court to demand an explanation.
Meloni stated on social media that Italian prosecutors are investigating her for possible embezzlement and aiding and abetting a crime in connection with the case.
In Italy, being placed under investigation does not imply guilt or guarantee formal charges.
In a video posted on Facebook, Meloni said, "I will not be blackmailed or intimidated. This is why some dislike me—because I want to change Italy for the better."
She also confirmed that Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, and cabinet undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano are being investigated. Despite the inquiry, Meloni is not required to step down as prime minister.
