Canada PM Justin Trudeau Acknowledges Immigration Missteps, Says ‘Could’ve Acted Faster'

Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday acknowledged the change in their immigration policy and shared details on what prompted his government to make the move. Citing details, he added that they “could have acted quicker and turned off the taps faster”.He also alleged that "fake colleges and big chain corporations have been exploiting" their immigration system for their own interests", prompting his govt to changing their immigration program.In a video message posted on X, Trudeau acknowledged that his government could have acted faster on changing the immigration policy. He also said that the population in Canada has grown really fast.In a nearly seven minute video posted on his YouTube channel, the Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) leader said, “In the last two years, our population has grown really fast, like baby boom, fast and increasingly bad actors like fake colleges and big chain corporations have been exploiting our immigration system for their own interests.”The Canadian PM further said that post the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a rise in demand for labours in the country.“So, we brought in more workers. It was the right choice. It worked. Our economy grew. Restaurants and stores reopened, businesses kept running, but most importantly, in spite of lots of economists, predictions, we avoided the worst-case scenario – a recession. But some saw that as an opportunity to profit from gaming the system,” he added.“Looking back, when the post-pandemic boom cooled and businesses no longer needed the additional labour help, as a federal team we could have acted quicker and turned off the taps faster,” Trudeau further stated.While addressing the issues of international students being charged more that the domestic ones, Trudeau said, “Far too many colleges and universities used international students to raise their bottom line. There is fraud and abuse and it needs to end."Under the new immigration plan for the year 2025-2027, Canada will see a contraction of 21% in the number of permanent residents which are bound to be admitted in the country. Further, the target for permanent residents has been reduced to 3,95,000 from 5,00,000.
