Chinese President Xi Jinping has touted his country's efforts in the area of biodiversity governance, saying China remains active and takes its obligations under environmental treaties "seriously" when it comes to climate change.
Last week, Xi announced during a prerecorded speech before the U.N. General Assembly that China is working stop pumping additional carbon dioxide, the main global warming gas, with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 – a significant step for the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases.
During Wednesday's summit on biodiversity, Xi asked others to join in that effort.
"China is happy to share with all parties its experience of biodiversity governance. China has pursued development under the vision of building an ecological civilization. China's embodied ecological progress in every dimension and face of its economic and social development," Xi said during his prerecorded speech.
Xi called on other nations to join China in finding "a way for man and nature to live in harmony and balance and coordinate economic development and ecological protection."
The push for green development in a high-quality economic recovery post pandemic needs to continue, he said.
Xi added: "Recognizing that our solutions are in nature, we could strive to find development opportunities while preserving nature and achieve a win-win in both ecological conservation and high-quality development."
He said he looks forward to hosting the 15th U.N. Biodiversity Conference, known as COP15, in Kunming, China next year.
Many countries have pledged they will aim to go carbon neutral by 2050, including the European Union.
The United States has so far not set such a goal. President Donald Trump, who once described climate change as a hoax invented by China, has started the process of pulling the U.S. out of the Paris accord.
