The biggest demonstration so far in nearly two months of anti-government rallies on Wednesday resulted in clashes between police and protesters in the streets around the parliament building in Bulgaria's capital Sofia.

Thousands of people took to the streets demanding the resignations of the prime minister and the chief prosecutor over allegations they allowed an oligarchic mafia to seize control of the Balkan country.

Police officers in riot gear stood in line in front of the parliament building during the mostly peaceful mass protest on Wednesday evening.

Late in the evening, as the majority of the protesters had left, groups of protesters threw small explosives, stones and pieces of garbage at the police officers, who stood in line at the stairs in front of the parliament building.

Tensions escalated until the police progressed forwards into the line of protesters.

More clashes and arrests followed.

Throughout the day and the evening several people have been detained and dozens of injured were taken to the hospital, authorities said.
