Face masks to be compulsory on Hong Kong public transport amid COVID-19 scare

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Monday that face masks would be compulsory for all passengers on public transport from midnight local time on Wednesday.

Another new measure is all catering establishments will only be allowed to provide takeaway service to customers from 6pm to 5am.

Lam's announcements came after a spike of Covid-19 infections in Hong Kong since early July.

The Chief Executive also made a comment on the past weekend's primary election organised by the city's democrats.

The poll was presented as a "primary" vote to enhance coordination among disparate pro-democracy groups for the upcoming Legislative Council election which is scheduled for September.

"If this so-call primary election's purpose is to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering what they call 35 plus, with the objective of objecting to resisting every policy initiative of the Hong Kong SAR government, then it may fall into the category of subverting the state power, which is now one of the four types of offences under the new national security law," Lam said.
