2024 New Year incoming! UN HQ in New York lights up with ‘Global Goals’ ahead of SDG Summit
Guterres pledges that United Nations “will keep rallying the world for peace, sustainable development and human rights."
The night sky over United Nations Headquarters in United States’ New York City on Sunday lit up with the lights reminding the world of the critical Global Goals ahead of the SDG Summit in September, 2024. United Nations, in an artistic call, appealed to everyone ‘act now’ for a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable future. The new year, 2024, must be the year for rebuilding trust and restoration of ‘hope,’ the United Nations said in its message.
“Humanity is strongest when we stand together,” UN Secretary-General said in his message to the world on the new year’s eve. He acknowledged that the year 2023 “has been full of enormous suffering, violence, and climate chaos.” UN chief appealed to the world leaders to “come together across divides for shared solutions.”
Furthermore, Guterres pledged that United Nations “will keep rallying the world for peace, sustainable development and human rights", and urged to "resolve to make 2024 a year of building trust and hope in all that we can accomplish together.”
UN Summit of the Future to be held on 22-23 September 2024
The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 2022 to hold the Summit of the Future on 22-23 September 2024. The crucial Summit of the Future will work to cement the goals of the SDG Summit and reshape the multilateral system in order to deliver on the promises of the United Nations Charter and the 2030 Agenda.
The world would come together to work towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that aims at comprehensive, far-reaching and people-centred set of universal and transformative Sustainable Development Goals and targets. UN is focused on its commitment to full implementation of the Agenda by 2030. The world leaders and the UN officials would discuss the impact of multiple and interlocking crises facing the world and is expected to reignite a sense of hope, optimism, and enthusiasm for the 2030 Agenda.
