"Today, India has presented an excellent example of the balance between ecology and economy before the world. Despite India being home to 17 percent of population of the world, its contribution to Global Carbon Emissions is less than four percent. India is one of those few economies of the world that is on the path to meet NDC targets,” the Prime Minister said.
Speaking at the opening of the COP28 high-level segment, PM Modi further expressed gratitude for the forum’s continuous support to issues raised by him including climate justice, climate finance and green credit. India, Modi said, is aiming towards the goal of cutting down its emissions intensity by 45 percent till 2030.
“We have decided to increase the share of non-fossil fuel to 50%. We will also keep going ahead towards our goal of net zero by 2070,” Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister reiterated that India contributes less than 4 percent to global carbon emissions despite being world’s largest population. He continued to add that India has achieved its emission intensity targets 11 years ahead of the committed timeframe and that it is on track to meet its Nationally Determined Contribution targets with the help of the collective efforts. "Today, from this forum, I announce one more pro-planet, pro-active and positive initiative - Green Credit initiative,” he added.
