Washington: As Donald Trump is set to become the 47th President of the United States, he will achieve several historical firsts.
Trump's historic victory will make him the second president to serve non-consecutive terms after Grover Cleveland, a feat that was last achived 132 years ago. Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th US President who served from 1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897.
Trump made an incredible political comeback in American history as he swept all the swing states. Trump was first elected as US President in 2016 and his termed continued till 2020. However, he failed to win a second term in a row after losing to Joe Biden in the 2020 election race.
At 78, he would be the oldest person in American history to be elected president. Joe Biden , who will turn 82 on November 20, is the oldest sitting President. Moreover, Trump is projected to become the first Republican to win the popular vote in 20 years, according to the New York Times.
Twice Impeached President
If Trump wins the race to the Oval Office, he will become the only President in US history to face impeachment proceedings twice during his official tenure. However, he was acquitted on all counts by the Senate in both the cases.
The first impeachment was in 2019 over allegations that Trump secretly sought help from Ukraine to boost his chances of re-election. It was alleged that Trump urged his Ukrainian counterpart Zelensky to investigate one of the frontrunners who would contest against him in the 2020 presidential election. It was reported that Trump had frozen $400 million in military aid to Ukraine, which is involved in a war with Russia. Trump was impeached for the second time on January 13, 2021, a week before his term expired, for allegedly inciting the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.
First Convicted Felon to Hold Office
The Republican, who was convicted of 34 felony counts earlier this year, will also be the first US President to hold office while facing legal indictment. Trump was convicted in New York in May, but is yet to be sentenced, and a trial is scheduled on November 26.
He has been accused of falsifying business records tied to hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 presidential election. Trump has, however, denied the allegations and has pleaded not guilty.
