Dhaka: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's daughter, Saima Wazed, today said that she is "heartbroken" with the loss of lives in the massive violence in the country and that she can not hug her mother during this difficult time.
Saima in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, said, "Heartbroken with the loss of life in my country Bangladesh that I love. So heartbroken that I cannot see and hug my mother during this difficult time. I remain committed to my role as RD."
Saima works as the Regional Director for Southeast Asia at the World Health Organisation (WHO).
This comes as the 76-year-old Haina was forced to quit as the protest against the government's jobs quota intensified with the killing of over 400 people in weeks-long unrest.
The former prime minister fled Dhaka reportedly after the Bangladesh Army gave her a 45-minute ultimatum. Ending her 15-year-long saga in power, Hasina left the stage capital in a military aircraft where she left for India after resigning.
On Tuesday, EAM S Jaishankar called for an all-party meeting where he said that Hasina was in shock and the Indian government is currently giving her time to "recover" and let them know her next move.
Following Hasina's ouster, the Army Chief Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus will be the leader of Bangladesh's interim government nation's army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said.
Meanwhile, Yunus has appealed to people to maintain peace after his name was announced as the head. "Violence is our enemy. Please don’t create more enemies. Be calm and get ready to build the country," he said.
"We are making every effort to hold the oath-taking ceremony tomorrow (Thursday). There was a proposal to hold it in the afternoon. However, that would result in a very tight schedule because Dr Yunus is expected to arrive in the country around 2:10 pm. It would be difficult to arrange the ceremony after that. Therefore, we may hold it around 8 pm. The arrangement will accommodate a total of 400 people," the Army Chief said in a televised address to the nation.
