The United Nations' International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated with an objective to promote awareness about the need to eradicate poverty and destitution worldwide, amongst the youth especially in developing countries.
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
It is celebrated on October 17 each year since 1993. This year marked the 27th anniversary of of the declaration by the General Assembly, in its resolution of 1992, of 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Not only this, but this year also marks the 32nd anniversary of the Call to Action by Father Joseph Wresinski, that celebrates the World Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty on October 17, and is also considered by the United Nations of the day as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
The day celebrates the opportunity and sources through which the effort and struggle of people living in poverty is recognised, a chance for them to make their concerns heard, and a moment to recognize that poor people are the first ones to fight against poverty. The main attraction of the celebrations has been the participation of the poor themselves.
The process to build a sustainable future
The United Nations also added that the process to build a sustainable future, demands everyone’s efforts to intensify our efforts towards eradicating extreme poverty and discrimination, and ensuring that everyone can fully exercise their human rights. Through this way, people can secure the planet and fulfil the needs of the society at the same time.
Several government and community charities support the Day for the Eradication of Poverty by taking a call on various country leaders and governments to prioritize fight against poverty a central part of foreign policy. Other methods to gain attention to the cause may include signing "Call to action" petitions, organizing concerts and cultural events, and holding interfaith gatherings that may include a moment of silence.
