The Iranian government has declared that they will be observing a day of national mourning on January 9 over the Ukrainian passenger plane crash and a stampede at the funeral of Qassem Soleimani. Iranian government spokesman Ali Rabiei condoled the families of the people who died in this incident. 

"Government expresses condolences to the families of our compatriots who died in Kerman during the funeral ceremony of slain commander Qassem Soleimani and in a plane crash this morning, the government declared January 9 a national mourning day," Rabiei wrote on Twitter.

Iran Fires Multiple Rockets On bases housing US troops In Iraq

Al-Assad and Ibril airbases in Iraq that houses the US and coalition forces have been hit by multiple rockets during the wee hours on Wednesday. This incident was first reported by Iranian state TV, who described it as Tehran’s revenge operation over the killing of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Gen. Qassem Soleimani. 

This also follows the development where the pro-Tehran factions in Iraq vowed to join forces and respond to the US for the killing of Iranian General. The US military has also confirmed that ongoing air attacks are taking place in the Iraqi airbase. The White House press secretary also said that the US President Donald Trump “has been briefed and is monitoring the situation” in Iraq. 

Tensions between Iran & US 

The longstanding tension between Iran and US surfaced again as the Iranian General was slain by the US in an airstrike near Iraq's Baghdad International Airport, ordered by US President Donald Trump on Friday. Post this, Iran had threatened "harsh retaliation" and subsequently, two airstrikes were reported near US Embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone on Saturday and Sunday.  

Following the developments, Trump said that the US would strike 52 sites in the Islamic Republic if any Americans were harmed. After this, there has been a continuous war of words between the two countries' officials.

US Defence Dept issues statement after airbase attack, says will take all necessary action

After the Iraqi airbase housing the US military and coalition forces were attacked by multiple rockets, the US Department of Defence issued a statement and said that they will take all necessary measures to protect and defend US personnel, partners, and allies in the region. 

The statement issued by the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Jonathan Hoffman also said that it was clear that these missiles were launched from Iran. An Iranian state TV described the attack as Tehran’s revenge operation over the killing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

Chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri reportedly said that the missile attacks today were just the first step. Baqeri also warned the US President saying that he should think about withdrawing its troops from the region and not to leave them within Iran's reach. The Revolutionary Guard Commander has confirmed that Al Asad and Erbil bases were the targets.

Iranian Envoy to India, Ali Chegeni said that Tehran will welcome any peace initiative by India for de-escalating its tensions with the US, after the killing of Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani. The Envoy in a statement said, "India usually plays very good role in (maintaining) peace in the world. At the same time, India belongs to this region. Iran's Supreme Leader calls for unity in Iran against 'enemy' US

Iran's Supreme Leader in a televised speech said, "Last night we slapped us on the face but military action is not enough. They brought war, division, sedition, distraction, destruction of infrastructure in Iran. They have acted everywhere like this in the world." Calling for an end to US presence in the region, Ayatollah Ali Khameini said, "We should learn about our enemy, America is our enemy and you people know it. Without the will, assistance, and vote, the Islamic Republic of Iran is nothing. The modus-operandi, fighting back against the enemy should be learnt." 

The Supreme Leader in a strong statement said that the victory of Iran's revolution will be the training of their youth. He reiterated that the 'enemy' is America. 

Ina warning, Khameini said that America should withdraw all its troops from the region. Calling for unity in Iran, he said, "The attitude of US is not seasonal, it's all-weather. We need to strengthen ourselves economically, militarily, socially, politically, and in many other ways to tackle this enemy."

The Foreign Secretary of United Kingdom Dominic Raab condemned the attacks on Iraqi military bases. He said, "e condemn this attack on Iraqi military bases hosting Coalition -including British forces. We urge Iran not to repeat these reckless and dangerous attacks, and instead to pursue urgent de-escalation."

Soleimani should have been terminated long ago: Trump

Trump asserted that US military eliminated “terrorist” Qassem Soleimani who was responsible for worst atrocities. The US President said that Soleimani used to train terrorists including Hezbollah. “Soleimani directed the recent attacks on US personnel in Iraq and was planning new attacks on American targets. “We stopped him. He should have been terminated long ago,” said Trump.

Iran must abandon its nuclear ambition: Trump

The United States will immediately impose powerful economic sanctions until Iran changes its behaviour and abandon its nuclear ambition, said the US President. Trump lashed out at Iran saying they created hell in Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. He said that Iran was given $150 billion in cash in the "defective" 2015 nuclear deal with which it created "hell in Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan".

Three rockets hit Iraq's green zone again

Media reports suggest that three Katyusha rockets have struck Baghdad's Green Zone again on Thursday. No casualties have reported so far, as per reports.

The new attack on Green Zone in Iraq comes after US President Donald Trump's briefing where he spoke about UNSC intervention for peace in the Middle East.
