Iran FM says talks with US on nuclear possible

Iran's foreign minister said on Tuesday his country will automatically return to the 2015 nuclear deal if the U.S implements the U.N security council resolution 2231.

Mohammad Javad Zarif made the comments during an interview with Iran Newspaper, an official daily publication.

Security Council resolution 2231, adopted in 2015, endorsed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which had seen Tehran limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

The landmark nuclear deal was made between Iran other world powers but in President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from the agreement in 2018.

Zarif said talks with the U.S as part of the P5+1 can start if this happens.

"For now, it's (resolution) 2231 as a member of the U.N for the U.S and the JCPOA for us. America can do this on their own. After this, negotiations can start."

He voiced hope the sanctions can be lifted "in a matter of months" after Joe Biden takes office.

"This may happen in a matter of months, considering as I said Mr. (Joe) Biden hasn't yet been able to establish his transition team."
