While addressing the United Nations General Assembly, actor Jason Momoa delivered a powerful speech on behalf of the island nations of the world that are drowning due to the effects of climate change. He talks about the impacts of ocean plastic pollution, rising sea level and how humans are willing to force disharmony with the natural balance of the world. He further called humanity a disease that is infecting the planet. Momoa has been outspoken about the effects of climate change on numerous occasions and claims that the human species need the earth to survive and not the other way around.

'Inherent hypocrisy'

After his six-minute speech, the netizens point out the difference between how the Hawaii-born actor's speech has been received to the way Greta Thunberg's activism has. The 16-year-old Swedish Climate activist gave a scorching speech at the UN on September 30. She did not try to be nice when she confronted the world leaders since she attacked industrial capitalism and its ethos of politics after which she became the subject of bullying. She was reportedly accused of emotionality, hysteria and was given other stereotypical feminine labels that are traditionally used to silence women's public speech. Many netizens defend Thunberg while pointing out the inherent hypocrisy.

Greta Thunberg, the teen activist

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg drew the attention of people across the world after her powerful speech at the United Nations on climate change on September 23 and winning Right Livelihood Award, also known as the 'Alternative Noble Prize'. Thunberg, a 16-year old student from Stockholm, first made headlines when she sat outside the Swedish Parliament and called it ‘School strike for the climate’ in Swedish. She skipped the school for it where attendance is compulsory for a student her age. On September 26, Thunberg took to social media to address the criticism she got after the speech at the UN. “Here we go again... As you may have noticed, the haters are as active as ever - going after me, my looks, my clothes, my behavior, and my differences. They come up with every thinkable lie and conspiracy theory. It seems they will cross every possible line to avert the focus since they are so desperate not to talk about the climate and ecological crisis.”
