Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ruled out the possibility of forming a coalition government after it failed to get a majority in the recently concluded general elections. Speaking at a news conference, Trudeau marked oil pipeline and climate change action as the priorities of the new government. Canadian PM said that he would also consult leaders of other parties to know their priorities and find a way to work together.
Trudeau to run a minority government
Trudeau-led Liberal Party got 157 seats out of 338, 20 seats less than the 2015 federal elections. The Conservatives got 121 seats while Bloc Quebecois and the New Democratic Party (NDP) won 32 and 24 seats respectively. After ruling out any sort of formal or informal coalition, Trudeau will be forced to run a minority government. Trudeau said that the new cabinet will be sworn on November 20.
Controversial Trans Mountain pipeline project
Though Trudeau is facing opposition on the controversial Trans Mountain pipeline from the Alberta oil sands to the Pacific Coast, he said that the government will go ahead with it.
“For too long we have been selling our natural resources to the United States at a discount,” Trudeau said. “Getting our resources to markets other than the United States and getting that done as quickly as possible remains a priority.”
'Will work hard for all Canadians'
Thank you, Canada, for putting your trust in our team and for having faith in us to move this country in the right direction. Regardless of how you cast your vote, our team will work hard for all Canadians.

After the trends gave a clear lead to the Liberal Party, Trudeau addressed the nation with a call for safer communities, a cleaner planet, and good quality of life. “We want this for ourselves, for our neighbours and for our kids and grandkids. We seek hardship for none and prosperity for all. That is the world we’re working toward -- and if we unite around these common goals, I know we can achieve them,” said Trudeau.
