A controversial event occurred when a Khalistan referendum was conducted inside a Gurudwara in Surrey, Canada.

Posters of the controversial figure of Khalistan movement Hardeep Singh Nijjar were widely exhibited throughout the event. Khalistan flags were being waved by supporters. Slogans supporting the separation of Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana to form Khalistan were also heard. This is the same Surrey Gurudwara where Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed by unknown assailants. After Nijjar's killing, tensions have mounted between India and Canada with Canadian PM Trudeau accusing the Indian government of involvement in Nijjar's killing.
