Iranian authorities have put up at least two billboards against French president Emmanuel Macron in the capital city of Tehran.

One gigantic billboard at Tehran's famous Vali-e-Asr square showed a painting of the sea, and a beach littered with discarded images of Macron, cartoonist Renald Luzier, and a copy of Charlie Hebdo.

Below it is the name of Mohammad and a slogan reading "The sea is free of filth and impurity".

Another billboard shows Macron depicted as the devil, alongside a sign reading: "The devil of Paris".

The development followed widespread protests over the past week after Macron eulogized a French teacher in Paris who was decapitated for showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in class.

President Hassan Rouhani criticised France and the West on Sunday for provoking violence, urging them to stay away from "internal affairs of Muslims."
