Mexico has jumped above 50,000 dead from COVID-19

According to Mexico's health authorities, the country's COVID-19 death toll has escalated to more than 50,000 fatalities, after 819 new deaths were reported in one day.

Assistant Health Secretary Hugo Lopez-Gatell said that the total number of deaths from COVID-19 in the nation had risen to 50,517.

That is the third-highest death toll in the world, behind only the United States and Brazil.

Authorities also reported 6,590 new confirmed coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 462,690.

However, the number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said the intensity of the pandemic was "already decreasing little by little" but not as rapidly as they "would like it to."
