Various local and international non-profit organizations in Beirut have been helping families affected by last week's massive explosion amid a weak government response. Caritas association was distributing food and medicine on Monday in Achrafieh, a neighborhood in east Beirut badly hit by the explosion on August 4.
On Sunday, World leaders and international organizations pledged nearly $300 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Beirut in the wake of the devastating explosion, but warned that no money for rebuilding the capital will be made available until Lebanese authorities commit themselves to the political and economic reforms demanded by the people.
Lebanon was already struggling with an unprecedented economic crisis before the explosion. More than 160 people were killed in the blast, around 6,000 were injured and thousands of residential buildings and offices were damaged. Since the blast, an estimated 300,000 people have been displaced, according the governor of Beirut.
