North Korea said on October 6 that they don't hope the US would bring alternative plans for their interrupted nuclear talks to a meeting proposed by Stockholm in two weeks after weekend negotiations in Sweden broke down. The ongoing talks between the US and North Korean envoys were broken off on Saturday. The U.S. State Department said it had acknowledged Sweden's encouragement to return for more discussions with Pyongyang in about fourteen days. North Korea said that the aim was now in Washington's court and warned Washington that it would wait only until the end of the year for the United States to change course. According to a local state news agency, North Korea said it has no intention to hold such 'sickening' negotiations and urged the US to take major steps to make a complete and irreversible withdrawal of the hostile policy toward the DPRK.
The talks have been constructive as long as the meeting lasted: Ann Linde
Sweden's foreign minister, Ann Linde, said the talks have been constructive as long as the meeting lasted. She said it is possible to achieve more talks but it totally depends on both parties. It is not clear whether North Korea will come back to the discussions, yet Pyongyang could be utilizing its methodology of consulting on the edge to pick up concessions as incidental advantages of taking part in dealings. A US official, Mintaro Oba, said they want to create the impression that the reason for the stalemate is the firmness of the U.S. side and they likely need to drive the United States to either return with an increasingly great negotiating position or in the end force President Trump to draw in at the summit level to keep diplomacy alive. Vipin Narang added that North Korea is also buying time to continue to expand and improve its missile and nuclear force, and negotiate the terms by which it is accepted as a nuclear weapons power.
The US has said it has come up with creative ideas
North Korea emphasized the year-end deadline that leader Kim Jong Un set for the United States to demonstrate greater adaptability in the discussions, which self-destructed in February during his summit with U.S. President Donald Trump. The two leaders met again in Panmunjom in June and agreed to restart working-level talks. During the working-level talks, the US has said it has come up with creative ideas and had good discussions with North Korea, without giving any additional details. But North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said Washington had made no preparations for the talks in Sweden but sought only to serve its own political objectives.
