On its 70th foundation day on September 9, 2018, North Korea held a huge military procession. As per reports, a series of military vehicles were seen and soldiers marched past North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The procession was held at the Kim Il Sung Square, which is situated in Pyongyang. However, one thing, which was missing from the procession was the nation's intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). The display of the missiles used to be a prominent part of the previous military processions by the North Korean Army.
Key highlights from the military procession conducted by the North Korean army:
- As per reports, the soldiers of the North Korean Army donned uniforms, depicting the North Korean history, starting from 1948, when the country was founded.
- The supreme leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, witnessed the parade from a balcony at Kim Il Sung Square. Along with him, were present, a special envoy sent by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Li Zhanshu.
- Reportedly, the country's ceremonial head of state, Kim Yong-Nam took the stage to address the audience instead of Kim Jong-un. Kim Yong- Nam took a pledge for more economic development and appealed to the soldiers that they should prepare themselves for any war.
- The theme of the event was the growing socio-economic conditions of the country.
- Several journalists from all over the world were being invited to watch the parade. Reportedly, the press invites mentioned that the journalists can't carry mobile phones and they were also refrained from broadcasting the event live.
As per reports, some experts had earlier speculated that North Korea will not be displaying their advanced ballistic missiles. Reportedly, the reason is that they do not want to make the US President, Donald Trump, angry.
In June 2018, the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un and the US president, Donald Trump held talks at a conference in Singapore. The leaders of the two countries discussed the issue of de-nuclearisation and the US president had appealed to the North Korean leader for denuclearisation.
The conference was a successful one as Kim Jong-un agreed to all the demands of US President Trump and in exchange had asked for security and economic guarantees in the country.
