On Wednesday night, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice-president Maryam Nawaz was admitted to Lahore’s Services Hospital shortly after she met her ailing father Nawaz Sharif, who is admitted to the same hospital. The doctors noticed symptoms of low blood pressure in Maryam. According to media reports, she was given a room in the hospital’s VVIP ward after her health deteriorated on Wednesday night. She was released on parole by the provincial government of Punjab. Earlier in the day, the Accountability court had rejected her plea to visit her father on the way to jail as her judicial custody was extended by three days.
Nawaz Sharif’s deteriorating health
Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was sentenced by an Accountability court for corruption in December last year. Since then, he has been lodged in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail. News regarding his ill-health has been doing the rounds since the last few months with his family doctor routinely posting updates on Twitter. However, his health worsened as his platelet count dropped from 16,000 to a critical 2,000 when he was brought to the hospital late on Monday night. This forced the doctors to go for immediate transfusion of platelets to save his life.
Family slams Imran Khan government
While Pakistan PM Imran Khan has directed the authorities to extend the best possible treatment to Sharif, the latter's family was unsparing in its criticism. After meeting Nawaz Sharif, his brother and PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif slammed the Khan-led government and requested fellow Pakistanis to pray for Nawaz Sharif’s health.
Writing on Twitter, he said, "I visited my brother Nawaz Sharif in hospital earlier today. I am gravely concerned and worried about his fast deteriorating health condition. The government must shun its apathy and attend to his serious health issues. I appeal to the nation to pray for Mian sahib."
Furthermore, Nawaz Sharif’s son Hussain Nawaz alleged that the former might have been poisoned.
Hussain Nawaz remarked, "Thrombocytopenia is a manifestation of poisoning. If anything happens to Nawaz Sharif, you know who are responsible for this."
