A Berlin zoo said that a giant panda who recently delivered twin cubs that have captured international attention has undergone a CT scan after the veterinary doctors uncover one of its kidneys was smaller than the other. The zoo authorities said that the nine-year-old Jiao Qing was examined last week by experts at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research after the problem was found on an ultrasound. The 110 kg giant panda was put under anesthesia and was scanned. The doctors revealed that one of his kidneys is smaller.
Panda gave birth to two baby cubs
The panda's urine will be tested soon to check whether the smaller kidney is working properly. According to the zoo authorities, the panda has given birth to two panda cubs in August and the baby cubs opened their eyes for the first time this week. The Berlin zoo released the pictures of the baby cubs on Friday that was cautiously captured in a camera six weeks after their birth.
Andreas Knieriem, the director of the zoo said the twins, the first giant pandas born in Germany are both receiving care from their mother, Meng Meng. She and father Jiao Qing came to Germany from China two years ago.
There are less than 2,000 of endangered pandas
There are less than 2,000 of the endangered pandas estimated to be alive today. The zoo said that the two twins were born with black ears and black rings around their tiny eyes. The baby cubs looked a little bit different from the gradual black and white coloring, according to Andreas Knieriem. The zoo authorities helped them gain weight by feeding them bottles of milk from mother Meng Meng and later said that they are fine feeding all on their own. The cubs have not been named yet. A German newspaper suggested keeping their names as 'Hong' and 'Kong' in solidarity with the ongoing protests there.
