Here is what you need to know about France's National Assembly
The National Assembly of France, known as the Assemblée Nationale in French, is the lower house of the French Parliament. It is one of the two chambers of the French legislative branch, the other being the Senate. Here's everything you need to know about France's National Assembly:
Role and Functions
Legislative Power: The National Assembly is responsible for passing laws and legislations in France. It reviews and debates proposed laws, makes amendments, and votes on their adoption.
Representation: The National Assembly represents the French people. Its members, known as deputies, are elected directly by the citizens through general elections. They are expected to represent the interests and concerns of their constituents in the legislative process.
Government Oversight: The National Assembly exercises oversight over the government. Deputies scrutinize the actions and policies of the executive branch, question government ministers, and hold them accountable.
Composition
Number of Deputies: The National Assembly consists of 577 deputies. They are elected for a five-year term through a two-round system. The electoral system ensures a mix of single-member constituencies and proportional representation.
Political Parties: Deputies belong to various political parties and are elected based on party affiliations. The National Assembly reflects the diversity of the French political landscape, with deputies representing different ideologies and viewpoints.
Committee System: The National Assembly operates through a committee system. Deputies are assigned to different committees based on their areas of expertise. These committees play a crucial role in examining proposed legislation in detail, conducting inquiries, and producing reports on specific issues.
Powers and Responsibilities
Lawmaking: The National Assembly has the primary responsibility of drafting, reviewing, and passing laws. Deputies propose legislation, debate its provisions, and vote on its adoption. The National Assembly's approval is essential for a bill to become law.
Budgetary Control: The National Assembly holds significant powers over the state budget. Deputies review and scrutinize government spending plans, propose amendments, and approve the annual budget. This ensures parliamentary oversight and accountability in financial matters.
Questioning the Government: Deputies have the right to question government ministers on various matters, including policies, actions, and government performance. Through oral and written questions, they hold the government accountable and seek clarification on important issues.
Confidence Votes: The National Assembly has the power to express confidence or no-confidence in the government. Confidence votes are crucial in determining the government's legitimacy and stability. If the government fails to win a vote of confidence, it may lead to its resignation or the calling of new elections.
Interactions with the Senate
The National Assembly works in conjunction with the Senate to form the French Parliament. While the National Assembly has more power and influence in the legislative process, the Senate serves as a second chamber with its own set of responsibilities. Both houses collaborate in a bicameral system, but the National Assembly has the final say in case of disagreements between the two chambers.

Here is what you need to know about contribution of Indians in World War I
PM Modi in his speech talked about contribution of Indians in World War I. Most people are unaware of this aspect of history. Many people might be unaware of the fact that nearly 75,000 Indian soldiers lost their lives during World War I.
During World War 1, India, as a part of the British Empire, made significant contributions to the Allied war effort. Indian soldiers, known as the "Indian Army," played a crucial role on various fronts, both in Europe and across other theatres of war. Their participation encompassed military operations, support services, and the mobilization of resources. Here is quick look at the contributions of Indians from the Allied side during World War 1:
Military Service
Recruitment: The Indian Army recruited around 1.3 million soldiers during the war. This included volunteers from diverse backgrounds, religions, and regions of India.
European Theatre: Indian troops were deployed to the Western Front in Europe. They fought in major battles like the First Battle of Ypres, Battle of Neuve Chapelle, Battle of Loos, and others. They demonstrated bravery and resilience in the face of challenging conditions.
Mesopotamian Campaign: Indian troops played a crucial role in the campaign against the Ottoman Empire in modern-day Iraq. They participated in battles like the Siege of Kut-al-Amara and the Fall of Baghdad.
North African Front: Indian units fought in the Senussi Campaign against the Senussi Bedouin forces in the Western Desert.
Gallipoli Campaign: Indian soldiers were part of the ill-fated Allied campaign to capture the Dardanelles Strait in present-day Turkey.

Prime Minister highlights India's linguistic diversity
PM Modi talks about India's linguistic diversity in France. This is rather remarkable because the PM is making an indirect point. France is notorious for being linguistically homogeneous. During the days of monarchy, many languages were wiped out to create a linguistically homogenous nation state. Even to this day, French national identity revolves around a langauge.
PM Modi, intentionally or unintentionally, is drawing a contrast between India's language policy and France's language policy. It is also noteworthy that PM Modi, in his speech, said "India is the mother of civilisation". Many in France still believe that the French enlightment civilized other parts of the world.
In his speech, PM Modi also talked about the glory of Tamil language. He disclosed that France will soon become home to a statue of Thiruvalluvar. Thiruvalluvar is one of the most well known Tamil poet.

Here is what you need to know about Bastille Day
PM Modi will be the Guest of Honour during this year's Bastille Day. Bastille Day, also known as French National Day or La Fête Nationale, is a momentous holiday that holds a special place in the hearts of the French people.
Celebrated annually on July 14th, it commemorates the historic storming of the Bastille prison in Paris in 1789, a pivotal event that marked the beginning of the end of monarchy in France and ignited the French Revolution. Bastille Day is a symbol of liberty and a reminder of the core principles that form the foundation of the French Republic.
On that fateful day, July 14, 1789, Parisian revolutionaries joined forces and stormed the Bastille in search of weapons and to free political prisoners. The Bastille, a formidable fortress and prison, was a potent symbol of royal authority and tyranny. Although only a handful of prisoners were incarcerated in the Bastille at the time, the audacious act of storming the prison became a powerful symbol of the people's determination to challenge the monarchy and fight for their rights.
The storming of the Bastille represented a turning point in French history. It marked the beginning of the French Revolution, a period of political and social upheaval that reshaped the nation. The ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity became the rallying cry of the revolutionaries, and the event served as a catalyst for significant political and societal transformations.
In the aftermath of the storming of the Bastille, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was proclaimed. This fundamental document outlined the rights and freedoms that every individual should possess, laying the groundwork for modern human rights principles.
Bastille Day was officially recognized as a national holiday in France in 1880. Since then, it has been celebrated annually as a day of national unity and pride. The festivities associated with Bastille Day are marked by a series of vibrant events and activities across the country.

PM Modi brings back focus to Global South in conversation with French newspaper
PM Modi called for the Global South to exhibit "collective strength and leadership" in order to amplify its voice. "What I really feel, we need is collective strength and collective leadership for the entire Global South, so that its voice can become more strong and the whole community can take leadership for itself. In order to build this sort of collective leadership, I don't think India should think in terms of its position as a leader nor do we think of it in that sense," he told Les Echos.
"It is also true that the rights of the Global South have been long denied. As a result, there is a feeling of anguish among the members of Global South, that they are forced into undertaking action but when it comes to decision making they don't find a place or voice for themselves," he added.
