At least 30 protesters were detained in Lima on Tuesday as workers were preparing to rally to demand economic assistance during the pandemic.

The National Police used tear gas to disperse the crowds that were heading to the Plaza Dos de Mayo.

Geronimo Lopez, Secretary-General of the General Confederation of Workers of Peru, said 30 people were detained.

He said hundreds of people have been let go from their jobs due to the pandemic and quarantine measures and don't have a way to support themselves or their families.

Peru has been under a national emergency quarantine for months.

There are 257,447 positive cases of COVID-19 and 8,223 deaths, according to figures from the Johns Hopkins University.
