Dozens of people gathered near the Eiffel tower in Paris on Saturday, to show their support for the women of Afghanistan following the Taliban take over.

The protesters said they feel that women in Afghanistan will no longer be safe, and asked the French government to open the borders to welcome Afghan evacuees, prioritizing women and children.

Final evacuations from Kabul were taking place on Saturday, before the planned withdrawal of all U.S. forces on August 31.

Taliban forces sealed off Kabul's airport on Saturday to most Afghans.

The Taliban have encouraged Afghans to stay, pledging amnesty even to those who fought against them.

The U.S. and its allies have said they will continue providing humanitarian aid through the U.N. and other partners, but any broader engagement - including development assistance - is likely to hinge on whether the Taliban deliver on their promises of more moderate rule.
