Iran's Revolutionary Guards commander General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed on January 3 in an airstrike carried out by the United States, was identified through his prominent red ring. As per international reports, a senior politician said that it was due to the ring on Soleimani's hand that he could be identified. After the confirmation of Iran's top commander's death, Iraqi journalists shared videos from the scene on social media which reportedly showed close-ups of Soleimani's ring. The US strike took place on Friday when Soleimani had disembarked from a plane and the blast tore his body to pieces along with that of the deputy commander of the Iranian-backed militias in Iraq known as Popular Mobilization Forces, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and six others. According to Iranian reports, nearly ten people were killed in the drone strike including Soleimani's son-in-law. Soleimani led a special forces unit of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards and has also been blamed for hundreds of Americans and several others across the region. Iran's President Hassan Rouhani in a tweet said that 'Iran will take revenge for this heinous crime'. In another statement, Rouhani also said that “there is no doubt that the great nation of Iran and the other free nations of the region will take revenge for this gruesome crime from criminal America”. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also reportedly warned of 'severe revenge for the criminals who bloodied their foul hands with his blood'.
