Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited hospital on Monday to get results from last week's health checkup and to have further tests.

Last week, Abe spent more than seven hours at Keio University Hospital in Tokyo for what officials said was an additional checkup, which he didn't have enough time for during a previous medical appointment in June.

This triggered a flurry of speculation in the Japanese media about the possibility that his health was declining.

His first term as prime minister ended abruptly 13 years ago because of health problems, fuelling concerns about his current condition.

Abe said Monday that he would do his absolute best to maintain his physical condition.

"I will continue to do my best in my work," he added.

The Japanese leader declined to share anything further on the results or what the additional health test results were for.

During the past week, he has spent a few hours a day in his office, only in the afternoon.
