"We are at a very important moment for Argentina, receiving the first 843,600 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine. The active component of these doses has been developed in the country and was packed in Mexico and in the United States, and has just arrived at the Argentine Republic. This is part of the 3,960,000 doses that, according to Health Minister Carla Vizzotti, were committed by AstraZeneca and that will be promptly distributed throughout the country to continue advancing the vaccination campaign."

4. Various of Sputnik vaccines being downloaded

STORYLINE:

After three months of delay and during a COVID-19 wave, Argentina received on Monday the first batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine for a total of 22.4 million doses signed with the laboratory.

As the production has experienced delays, the vaccination campaign is slower than expected by the Argentine government.

Authorities said Argentina expects 3.9 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine during the following weeks, which will help to accelerate immunization.

Only 2.4 million had received the necessary doses for immunization.

The vaccines arrived at the Ezeiza international airport, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, on a LATAM Cargo flight from Miami, United States. Another flight on Monday, carried Sputnik V vaccines.

AstraZeneca produces the active ingredient of its drug in a laboratory located in the province of Buenos Aires and sends it to be bottled to Mexico and the United States.

Logistics problems in that first country recently forced to search for laboratories in the United States to package and start shipments of the vaccine.

The new vaccines arrive to Argentine as a coronavirus outbreak has heavily stressed the healthcare system.

Some intensive care units has said to be operating near full capacity, which, added to the increase in the number of deaths in recent days, pushed the authorities to order a strict quarantine.

Argentina has so far recorded 3.5 million infected and close to 75,000 deaths from COVID-19.
