A freelance deaf interpreter David Cowan has become an internet sensation as he appeared at the side of the stage while Beyonce was giving her performance. He was captured translating the pop star's Get Me Bodied at Atlanta's Pride celebrations with expressive movement and big gestures. The 56-second clip was reportedly filmed by Jeremy Turner of Team Turner Real Estate and posted by the deaf model and Dancing With the Stars winner Nyle DiMarco on Twitter. The video posted on October 14 has already been viewed more than two million times and has received almost one lakh likes.
Who is David Cowan?
David Cowan is reportedly deaf himself and is known for translating for the Women's March, various Black Lives Matter rallies, anti-Trump protests and a Pulse nightclub shooting vigil at the Center for Civil and Human Rights over the years. He is also known to sign for politicians like Rep. Lewis, Gov. Brian Kemp and not long ago he signed the Georgia governor's press conference on Hurricane Dorian at GEMA.
Cowan previously told an international media outlet that making the language accessible to the community has been his passion and it's a privilege to break down the communicator barrier. In the year 2017 Cowan also became the first deaf person to be named Grand Marshal of Atlanta Pride after working as an interpreter at the celebration since 2000. As soon as Cowan learned that his performance has gone viral he took on Twitter to thank DiMarco and posted a picture of himself with him.
Netizens were quick to respond and praise him for his work.
