Families of those who died when a school collapsed during the 2017 earthquake in Mexico City gathered on Saturday to remember the victims three years on. On September 19, 2017, the 7.1 magnitude tremor shook central Mexico, killing 228 people in the capital alone.
One of the buildings which collapsed was a private school in the south of the city that, like other structures, had undergone modification without regard for regulations. A total of 26 people died at the Enrique Rebsamen school, including 19 minors.
This week the capital justice issued its first sentence related to the earthquake when it considered the school's director, Monica Garcia Villegas, guilty of 26 homicides because she had built an apartment on top of the wing which contributed to the collapse, knowing she was breaking the law.
