A man named Quan from China recently tried to smuggle lighter through security at the Chinese airport by hiding it in his mouth. As lighters are banned on flights in China, Quan who had a lighter in his luggage reportedly removed and attempted to secrete in his mouth to pass through security. However, he wasn't successful as reported footage at Shenyang Taoxian International Airport shows a female officer checking Quan for metal objects as he spreads his arms.
Quan is believed to be a first-time flier, as soon as the security officer saw that his mouth was bulging, the officer asked what was in his mouth. At first, Quan claimed that he had simply lost a tooth but as soon as the officer became suspicious, he was asked to open his mouth. Eventually, he spat the lighter out and handed over to the security officers. He was later detained for the offence and removed from China Souther Airlines flight as well. Officer Li Cheng told an international media outlet that it was Quan's first time flying and he thought by hiding the lighter in his mouth he could evade the security officers.
Quan later claimed while explaining his situation that he was a long-time smoker and he didn't think that he would be able to get through a two-hour-long flight without lighting up a cigarette. He further added that he tried to smuggle so that he could smoke in the sky. Quan was fined with £1,000, however, he wasn't given a flight ban as it was reportedly his first offence.
Another bizarre incident
Smuggling a lighter might be the first but it surely is not the most bizarre incident as recently at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi the security agents reportedly encountered a passenger who tried to get through the line without detection by dressing up as a man almost 50 years his senior. Jayesh Patel, a 32-year-old man dressed in a white outfit and dyed his hair and beard white to fool agents into thinking he was 81-years-old. Patel's faulty passport said his name was Amrik Singh and that he was born in 1938. he had been planning to ruse for four months and wanted to travel to the US in hopes of landing a better job and as well as meet up with a woman.
