While the summers are over, travel freaks are always on the lookout for marvellous places to travel. However, when it comes to travelling to an unknown place safety becomes one of the key priorities for the vagabonds living around the world. On Saturday, the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) produced the Global Peace Index (GPI), which is touted as the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness.

According to IEP, the report presents the most comprehensive data-driven analysis of trends in peace, its economic value, and how to develop peaceful societies. The index covers 99.7% of the world’s population and is calculated using  23 qualitative and quantitative indicators. The ranking takes into account statistics like homicide and prison population, terrorism, military might and international conflicts. Here is the list of the top 10 safest countries in the world:

Top 10 safest nations in the world

The three factors, IEP takes into consideration are the level of Societal Safety and Security, the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict and the degree of Militarisation. Following is the list of the 10 countries in the world.

  • Iceland
  • Denmark
  • Ireland
  • New Zealand

Where do the major economies stand?

One of the major shocks that came with the list was the position of the top 5 economies of the world on the list. The United States of America, which is touted as one of the most prominent superpowers, bagged the 131st spot. The recent rise in the incidents of mass shootings can be considered as part of the reason for the US standing so low on the list.

Meanwhile, the world’s second-largest economy in the world, China took the 80th position. While Japan was at number 9, Germany and India were at 15 and 156, respectively. The international body went on to present Afghanistan as the least safe country in the world, taking the 163rd spot. The Taliban takeover in 2021 eventually led to gross violations of human rights in the country.
