Scuffles broke out in Hong Kong's Legislative Council on Thursday as lawmakers attempted to debate a bill that would make it illegal to insult or abuse the Chinese national anthem.

Legislative Council security staff tried to remove Chairman of the Democratic Party, Wu Chi-wai, before legislator Ray Chan was pinned down and then carried out of the council chamber.

Council President Andrew Leung ordered Chan to stop shouting, and then suspended the debate when Chan refused to be quiet.

Earlier, the Legislative Council meeting was suspended just a few minutes after it started when security officials tried to remove pro-democracy lawmaker Chu Hoi-dick from the chamber after he held up a protest banner.
