Hong Kong’s leader, Carrie Lam recently issued a statement slamming the US senators who claimed the city is becoming a police state, just a day after a mass rally protested in Washington, against Beijing for restricting its public freedoms in the international hub.
Carrie Lam unable to resolve the Hong Kong crisis
The violent pro-democracy protests for more than four months, has wrecked the city with Beijing-backed CEO Carrie Lam unable to resolve the unprecedented crisis. In the past few months, the city has encountered violent clashes between the protesters and the police.
The critics have accused Carrie’s government and the Chinese police of being insensitive and heavy-headed. US legislators including senator Josh Hawley are trying to pass legislation that would make Hong Kong’s special trading status subject to annual reviews of its political situation.
Foreign politicians misled: Lam
Lam recently addressed a press conference, saying that many foreign politicians across the globe are misled by the fact that this is a peaceful protest that fights for human rights and freedom, and even claim that they have not seen any violence, but the truth is exactly opposite to it.
Hawley, a sponsor of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, had said during a weekend visit to the city that it was “in danger of sliding towards a police state”. Amongst many others, fellow Republican senator Ted Cruz also accused the Chinese government of forcibly implying dictatorship on the Chinese citizens.
Lam also said that the American legislator had prejudgments about the violent situations occurring in China and Hawley describing Hong Kong as becoming "a police state is totally irresponsible and unfounded.”
On the other hand, the Missouri senator stood firm to his ground, rigidly stating that he purposely used the word ‘police state’ because he believed it to be the truth and he could see Hong Kong’s situation. I saw it myself," Hawley tweeted. “If Carrie Lam wants to demonstrate otherwise, here’s an idea: resign.”
