Hong Kong: Pigeon affected by tear gas rescued by protesters

In the wake of violent protests in Hong Kong, a series of videos have gone viral and garnered a lot of attention as a group of boys and girls were seen a washing pigeon with water after it was apparently injured by the Tear Gas used against the protesters. The group was also seen using paper towels and water to clean the eyes of the bird and then went on to clean its feathers. The individuals were also seen helping the pigeon drink some water.

Hong Kong's worst political emergency

In the events that preceded this, police forces in the semi-autonomous state of Hong Kong had resorted to the means of using tear gas at protesters amid escalating tensions that led to a lot of arrests as protests that were once peacefully turned violent as the demonstrations entered its 16th week in the city's political emergency.

Reportedly, these past few months have seen Hong Kong being subjected to anti-government demonstrations, over the issue of a controversial extradition bill. The protests of late have of late seen a rise in violent activities by protesters and police alike. Recently, a young protester was shot in the chest with a gun during a violent confrontation between the people protesting and the cops.

Hong Kong's beleaguered leader, Carrie Lam, stated that the police forces in Hong Kong, have taken more than 2200 people into custody in relation to the 4 month long anti-government demonstrations that have plagued the semi-autonomous state of Hong Kong. While speaking to an international media outlet, Lam stated that these protests have caused a problem for authorities for quite some time now and have often turned into something violent and have caused damage to both people and property.

A former British colony

A former British colony, Hong Kong was given back to China in the year 1997 and enjoys a "one country, two systems" policy but has long been subject to demonstrations that have largely been tagged as anti-government by the Chinese authorities and has also seen people being stripped of the civil liberties as the protests turned violent in nature.

Even though Carrie Lam pulled back the anti-extradition bill that started the protests in the month of June, the protestors had by then transformed into a more extensive and progressively fierce enemy of the government.
