Hurricane Dorian: $260 million, emergency fund approved in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico approves for $260 million as the emergency fund for Hurricane Dorian. Hurricane Dorian expected to turn into to Category 3 before it reached Florida
On August 29, Emergency reserve funds amounted to USD 260 million were approved by the Financial Oversight and Management Board in Puerto Rico. The funds were approved as the Hurricane Dorian approaches closer to the island. The Sputnik stated to ANI that the funds will be utilized to undertake the emergency preparation for the hurricane. The hurricane expected to hit US Virgin Islands as well.
Funds to be used only during emergency
The Financial Oversight and Management Board issued a statement saying, “In light of Hurricane Dorian and the related Federal declaration of a state of emergency for Puerto Rico, the Financial Oversight and Management Board has authorized utilization of Emergency Reserve funds from fiscal years 2019 and 2020 as needed by the Government of Puerto Rico without prior Oversight Board approval of reapportionment through September 28, 2019”The statement also said that the total fund of $260 million can only be used for emergency-related issue of Hurricane Dorian. On August 28, it was forecasted by the USA’s National Hurricane Center that Hurricane Dorian will hit Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands in the next six to 12 hours.
Emergency declared in Florida
Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in Florida to make preparations for Hurricane Dorian. In an interview, DeSantis told CNN that, “Today. I am declaring a state of emergency to ensure Florida is fully prepared for Hurricane Dorian. It’s important for Floridians on the East Coast to monitor this storm closely.” He further requested the Floridians to gather ample amount of food supplies and stock up for the next seven days. In the latest updates by CNN, Hurricane Dorian hit the US Virgin Islands and is storming towards Puerto Rico with high intensity. The US President Donald Trump also tweeted this morning saying, “Be prepared and please follow State and Federal instructions.”
According to the latest updates, the hurricane is getting stronger with higher intensities. It is expected to turn into to Category 3 hurricane before it reached Florida.
