The Irish Foreign Minister on Monday met with the EU's chief Brexit negotiator in Brussels, less than two weeks before the UK is set to leave the bloc.

Simon Coveney stressed the importance that "guarantees that have been provided to prevent border infrastructure" on the island of Ireland needed to be implemented in parallel with the process of negotiating a post-Brexit deal.

Britain is expected to officially leave the European Union on Jan. 31 after a debilitating political period that has bitterly divided the nation since the 2016 Brexit referendum.

Two days before the exit, on 29 January, the EU legislature will vote on Brexit.

Difficult negotiations setting out the new relationship between Britain and its European neighbours will then continue throughout 2020 during an 11-month transition period.
