North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump have a ‘special relationship’, said a Pyongyang official on October 24. Despite the ‘special relationship’, North Korea’s Foreign Ministry adviser Kim Kye Gwan accused the United States of maintaining hostility against them. Hinting at the end-of-year deadline set by Kim Jong Un for a mutually acceptable term for nuclear negotiations, the official urged Washington to act “wisely”.

Unpredictable relationship of the leaders

The relationship between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un has been unpredictable all along. In August, Trump said that Kim Jong Un sent him a letter in which he had wished to start the negotiations as soon as the joint U.S.-South Korea joint exercise was over. Trump had claimed that the North’s supreme leader also wrote a small apology for testing the short-range missiles.

'Not a violation of our signed Singapore agreement'

The missile tests, which was condemned by South Korea in a resolution, apparently did not violate the agreement signed in Singapore. “Kim Jong Un and North Korea tested 3 short-range missiles over the last number of days. These missiles tests are not a violation of our signed Singapore agreement, nor was there discussion of short-range missiles when we shook hands,” Trump tweeted after the tests. But the nuclear negotiations have not resumed after the collapse of the February summit between Trump and Kim Jong Un.

South Korea worried over missile tests

North Korea’s missile tests have been a constant worry for their Southern neighbours. On September 30, the National Assembly of South Korea had adopted a resolution denouncing North Korea’s nuclear advancement and missile provocations. The resolution claimed that North Korea’s “recent military provocations” were in disregard of the international community’s expectations.

“Any military actions and provocations committed by North Korea for the purpose of further developing its nuclear and missile capabilities undermine peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and calls upon the North Korean regime to immediately cease any military provocations,” read the resolution. “Strongly urges North Korea to strictly adhere to the September 19 military agreement, which aims to cease mutual hostilities and prevent accidental armed clashes,” it added.
