Myanmar expats continue to protest in Bangkok

Expatriates from Myanmar held rallies outside the Myanmar Embassy and in front of the United Nations' regional office in Bangkok on Monday against last week's military coup.

About 80 people stood nearby the Myanmar Embassy and sang "Kabar Makyay Bu" (We Won't Be Satisfied Until the End of the World) - an anthem of the country's new non-violent resistance movement.

The song was written to inspire Myanmar's ultimately failed 1988 uprising against military rule, and is set to the tune of "Dust in the Wind," a 1977 song by the U.S. rock group Kansas.

Another group shouted pro-democracy slogans while holding pictures of Aung San Suu Kyi and symbols of her National League For Democracy party.

Some people also gathered in front of the United Nations' office in the afternoon.

Many said they will continue to protest in Thailand, while demonstrations in neighboring Myanmar intensified.

There have been no signs that either the protesters or the military will back down in their fight over who is Myanmar’s legitimate government: the politicians from Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party, which won the recent elections in a landslide, or the military junta.
