The Indian Embassy in Nepal organised a Khadi Fashion Show on Tuesday to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The models at the show wore outfits made of Khadi, a hand-woven natural fibre cloth which Gandhi promoted widely at the time of freedom movement. The designers showed how they used khadi innovatively so that it can become a fashion statement as well. The fashion show, organised by the Indian Embassy India House in Kathmandu, saw many former ministers, ambassadors, high-level officials present along with others. The current Ambassador of India to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri inaugurated the programme as the Chief Guest.
Indian Embassy shared pictures on Twitter
The official Twitter page of the Embassy of India Kathmandu posted the pictures of the Tuesday event. The pictures were of the Indian ambassador speaking on the ramp while inaugurating the event. Other pictures mostly were of the models walking the ramp in their Khadi ensemble. The event by Embassy of India was associated with the South Asia Foundation to mark 150th Gandhi Jayanti. The images were posted on October 1, the day the fashion show was held. Hashtags like #Gandhi150, #GandhiJayanti, and #GandhiAt150 were used along with captions explaining the event. Various other Twitter users have also posted videos of the event.
A Khadi theme fashion show in Delhi
A similar theme fashion show was organised by the Pearl Academy on September 28, ahead of Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary on Wednesday. The show was a mark of respect to the Father of the Nation. The Khadi fabric was used to create outfits for the fashion show by the designers. The theme of the show was Ethical Eco Collective and was held at the Select City Walk mall in Saket, New Delhi. The aim of the fashion show was to re-invent the fabric Khadi that Mahatma Gandhi endorsed as a sign of Indian textile heritage. The Member of Parliament from South Delhi, Ramesh Bidhuri shared an image from the fashion show calling it a good way to engage the young to contribute towards the national movement.
