Netanyahu: Autistic Palestinian's death a tragedy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday called the deadly shooting by police of an unarmed Palestinian man with severe autism a "tragedy"."We all join in the grief," Netanyahu said, but he stopped short of apologizing for the incident. Eyad Hallaq, a 32-year-old Palestinian with severe autism was chased by Israeli border police forces into a nook in Jerusalem's Old City on May 30 and fatally shot as he cowered next to a garbage bin after apparently being mistaken for an attacker.

He was just a few meters (yards) from his Elwyn El Quds school. His shooting drew broad condemnations and revived complaints alleging excessive force by Israeli security forces.The shooting has drawn comparisons to the death of George Floyd in the US and prompted a series of small demonstrations against police violence toward Palestinians.The calls for justice have crossed Jewish-Arab lines, a rarity in this deeply polarised society.
