North Korea on US negotiations says that their patience has a limit

North Korea said on October 10 that their patience has a limit and that the nation is reconsidering its steps to build trust with the United States. This was after the United Nations Security Council reportedly raised the issue of recent weapon tests in North Korea. Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry has also threatened to resume its nuclear tests along with those of long-range missiles while accusing the US of influencing members of the UNSC after the weekend breakdown of North Korea-US negotiations scheduled in Sweden.

North Korean patience has a limit

An official from the North Korean foreign ministry said that there is no law which Kim Jong-un's country has refrained from which will be continued indefinitely. The spokesman has also found it “unfair” for the members of the Security Council to take up their tests of ballistic missiles as opposed to the ones conducted by America. The North Korean official further also said that this fact is “prompting” them to reconsider the “crucial pre-emptive” methods their country has taken in order to gain US' trust. However, some observers have even said that North Korea's threat may be a strategy to pressurize the US to negotiate in a manner to resume nuclear and long-range missile tests. Furthermore, North Korea answered the questions on their recent test on October 2 saying it was for self-defence.

'Concrete steps'

The European members reportedly asked North Korea to take concrete steps towards ending their programs involving nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner. It was few days after North Korea test-fired a brand new submarine-launched ballistic missile, which has also been denoted as the most provocative action by the country since 2018 when they resumed negotiations with the US. In order to sustain the dialogue between the two, North Korea had also halted their tests for nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. The Council members, however, joined in to ask North Korea to abandon all weapons of mass destruction and initiate “meaningful negotiations”. However, according to the North Korean statement, the condemnation in UNSC has been a grave provocation for them.
