STORYLINE:

The two candidates to be the next president of Peru each vowed Monday to tackle the coronavirus pandemic and not seek re-election should they take office.

Leftist Pedro Castillo and right-wing Keiko Fujimori signed a document making 12 declarations, including respecting the rights of "minorities and the marginalized" groups in a country accustomed to their leaders failing to deliver on their promises.

Both candidates swore in front of Peruvian Cardinal Pedro Barreto, who was representing the requests of the Peruvian Catholic Church, the union of evangelical Christian churches and human rights organizations.

Later Monday, Fujimori was denied permission to travel to Ecuador for a political forum over ongoing charges of money laundering.

A prosecutor has requested 30 years in prison for the 45-year-old, who is accused of laundering money she received for her 2011 and 2016 presidential campaigns which she lost.

Brazilian construction company Odebrecht and other Peruvian millionaires have told the prosecution that they gave money for Fujimori's campaigns.

She has denied all charges.

All polls ahead of the June 6 vote show Castillo in first place, but Fujimori has started to get closer and the results are uncertain, according to experts.

Whoever accumulates the most votes will take over July 28 when Peru reaches 200 years of independence from Spain.
