Peru announced on Friday that beginning October 5, the country will restart flights to neighboring countries for passengers who have tested negative for the coronavirus in swab tests.

Peru's President Martin Vizcarra said the transport ministry was still evaluating the destinations that may be reopened.

The Ministry of Transport announced early September that the first countries of interest to Peru were the United States, Mexico, Spain, Chile, Brazil and Argentina.

Vizcarra said passengers arriving in the country needed to have tested negative in the previous 48 hours.

Peru has slowly reopened its economy, but the country is grappling with an economic crisis that the World Bank estimates to be the third-worst downturn in the world.

Vizcarra announced plans for a bill that would seek to speed up the process for approving the use of newly-developed vaccines.
