Various Indian politicians, international diplomats, celebrities, and netizens have paid their tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary
On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th Birth Anniversary, several politicians, celebrities, and netizens paid tribute to him with various tweets since the morning of October 2. Gandhi, who is referred to as 'Father of the Nation' in India was the epitome of peace and nonviolence who paid a pivotal role in Indian independence movement. To honour 'Bapu', several politicians including the First citizen of India, Indian President Ramnath Kovind, PM Narendra Modi, Chief Ministers of several states and other personalities have extended their wishes for Gandhi Jayanti. There were also several celebrities who tweeted tributes for Gandhiji. Netizens across India and the world have also tweeted quotes and images of Bapu on their social media. With this, #GandhiJayanti, #Gandhiat150 and #MahatmaGandhi are among the top trends on Twitter this morning.
UN Secretary-General and Russian Embassy tweets on Gandhi Jayanti
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was among the many who paid his homage to Gandhi. Guterres in a tweet on October 2 wrote that Mahatma Gandhi pioneered successive non-violent movements that changed history. He further said that the Mahatma's philosophy is still at the core of the UN. Gandhi Jayanti also marks the International Day of Non-Violence. Guterres wrote that Gandhi's courage and conviction are an inspiration on today's date.
The Embassy of Russia also tweeted on Gandhi Jayanti. The Embassy wrote that Mahatma Gandhi always recognized the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy as a kindred spirit and mind in some regard. They added that the two exchanged letters, discussed the situation in the world as both immensely cared about the fate of the underprivileged and oppressed.
