The communication between the two lasted over a period of less than a year along with the exchange of books. Due to this significance of ideas exchange, Gandhi had recognised Tolstoy as among the top 3 important influencers along with John Ruskin and Shrimad Rajchandra (Raichand). The exhibition will compare Tolstoy's Bread Labour and Mahatma Gandhi's Satyagraha and their comprehension of truth, kindness and love being the solution for the world's problems. The exhibition shall also display quotes from selected works of Mahatma Gandhi and copies of books which influenced the two great personalities.
More about the Tolstoy-Gandhi relationship
Due to the influence of Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi began using a peaceful way of protest known as Satyagraha against the Asiatic Law Amendment in Transvaal in South Africa. However, due to the protest, he was imprisoned for two months. In 1910, Gandhi had formed a cooperative colony near Johannesburg which was later known as Tolstoy Farm. It was there when Gandhi spread the idea of Satyagraha, which went a long way towards winning India freedom from the British.
