The Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday that Moscow is prepared to mediate the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh, opposing Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the Russian government would like to use Moscow as a platform to organise a meeting between the foreign Ministers of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan in order to find a way to stop military actions in the disputed region. The talks would also include the Minsk group and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the Ministry were holding consultations with parties regarding the possible time for them to start the negotiations.
The latest clashes between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces began Sept. 27 and mark the biggest escalation of the decades-old conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.
The region lies in Azerbaijan but has been under control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since the end of a separatist war in 1994.
