A 27-year-old figure skater, Keegan Messing, from Canada has won hearts for his act from the world stage during the medal ceremony of a recent competition in Oakville. Messing won bronze at the 2019 Autumn Classic International and was on the victor's platform beside gold decoration champ, Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan. As the Japanese national song of devotion began to play, Messing turned on the platform and lifted the Japanese banner so Hanyu could see it during the festival. When the national anthem of Japan began to play, Messing unfurled the Japanese flag behind the podium and held it up while Hanyu faced it for the rest of the anthem.

During the medal ceremony, the Canadian unfurled the Japanese flag for winner Yuzuru Hanyu to face throughout his national anthem.
